Steve Yates In today's fast food, blipvert affected, vertigo-paced world, it's challenging to release music that is anything but 3.30mins of pre-planned, pre-packaged made-for-the-masses pop. 28mins of ambient bass and keyboards is certainly challenging. But like a good book, a long run or a great drive, some things get better when they take their time. Make a steaming cup of earl grey (other teas are available) and give yourself 30 minutes of peace. There's no musical acrobatics here, no hemi-demi-semiquavers, no clever counterpunctextual dominant modulation (I'm just making stuff up now). Just freedom, ideas, and raw music. But raw in a nice way, not like 'urg, this avocado is raw' kinda way. Raw, unfiltered, unpretentious, un-ego (can that be a thing?). Steve and Rob create loads of space for each other and it works so well. Listen more and play less. Someone wise once said 'you can't just play a hundred notes a minute and hope some music falls out'. This is all deliberate, all music. I quite like it, in case you didn't know. I've been wanting to record with Robert Logan for many, many years. The first time we met, he was still a teenager, at a gig in a church in West London, but already he was making extraordinary music - making musical choices that were bold and wise way beyond his years. He had great ears even then and an acute sense of sound design.

That it took this long is not necessarily a bad thing. We've both developed a lot in the intervening years, and certainly in my case, I've listened to a lot of his music and learned a little more about his sound world. Finally, we got to collaborate thanks to that same church gig in West London. Before the gig, we met up in his studio and recorded three long pieces. These are the first two of them. I'm still not wholly committed to a running order or a way of thinking about what these should be in terms of grouping them - we have the three studio tracks, and a long live improv from the gig. Should they all be one project? Should it be split 3 + 1? For now, it'll be 2 + 2 - these two first, then the other two later, but as they appear, feel free to recombine them in interesting ways. Change the order and see what works for you :) We'll add more sleeve-notes here as we go along - not least of all the stories behind the titles!
