about

My first solo house concert in California in many, many years.

My last few performing visits to the state have been shows with Daniel Berkman and Artemis, but this time I resisted (not very successfully!) the lure of more duo shows with Daniel, but even then how could I possibly say no when he offered to come and play? When you get to the last track, you'll be able to answer that one easily.

The show was at my amazing friends Bob and Kelly's house - I've been playing shows at their house for almost 20 years, and my friendship with Bob dates back to the late 90s. Just extraordinary beautiful people who have a knack for turning their home into my favourite venue in the world.

And then people showed up. The weather was dreadful and quite a few people who'd intended to be there couldn't be, but it would've caused all kinds of logistical problems if they'd shown up as we were rammed! A packed house.

There are two lil' cover tunes here. People Get Ready I'd played live once before, I think, and it was at Bob and Kelly's back in the 00s, on a borrowed bass. So I dropped that in the set at the last minute. Crazy Love was a tune that Carisa and I had heard in a shop on the drive up to San Jose and I immediately thought 'that would make a beautiful solo tune'. So a quick run through in soundcheck and I had enough of it to keep it spontaneous but not just make a complete hash of it! How to improvise other people's songs ;)

I really hope you enjoy the music - there are some very familiar sounds and ideas here and some others that jumped out as fully formed new musical ideas. That's the joy of improvising, that liminality between the brand new and the deeply familiar. Like revisiting a place, it's never quite the same, because we're never quite the same. Things change and the music changes to reflect that.
